Janssen asks Daman to expand an app for a trial on psoriatic arthritis

Daman, a Danish virtual healthcare company, decided through Janssen to expand an app to collect patient-reported outcomes (PRO) in a psoriatic arthritis study. The company previously developed RheumaBuddy, an app for Apple and Android devices designed to help rheumatoid arthritis patients manage their disease on their own; The new app will use the RheumaBuddy concept to allow Janssen to collect information about patients enrolled in a psoriatic arthritis clinical trial.

“The app will capture patient-reported outcomes to assess the effect of psoriatic arthritis on patients in everyday life. We will use validated PRORs and in addition, frequently capture knowledge issues such as mood, fatigue, itching, stiffness, through patient assessment, as well as sleep and activity, are automatically captured using a medically validated smartwatch,” a Daman spokesperson said.

Through the app, Daman aims to provide patients with a valuable tool and Janssen with a way to download longitudinal data based on knowledge about the lives of other people with psoriatic arthritis participating in the clinical trial.

Clinical trial sponsors have used PRO to collect aspects of patients’ lives, such as mood, fatigue, itching, and stiffness for years. However, site-based knowledge capture has limitations that the app aims to solve.

The spokesperson cited the fact that the professionals integrated into the app are “very cost-effective” and have “high accuracy” like other technologies.

Jan Koren, president of EUROPSO, the federation of psoriasis patient associations in Europe, was involved in the co-creation process. The goal was to create an app that would work for patients with psoriatic arthritis, a disease suffered by another five million people in Europe and physical and mental reasons negatively affects the quality of life.
