May 7: Will Odessa have a new secondary and/or vocational and technical education center?

The answer to that will come on Saturday after the electorate goes to the polls to vote on the two features of the bonds proposed through ECISD, one that could put the first new high school in Odessa in more than 50 years.

Voters will face the $398,255,000 bonus, which is presented in two proposals.

Proposition A, $215,255,000 that would come with lifecycle maintenance and repairs/replacements of school district buildings ($130,255,000); Construction of a new professional and technical center ($70 million), which would feature study rooms and laboratories for systems such as welding, construction, physical sciences, automation and procedure technology, HVAC, plumbing and others.

It would have a canopy of about 150,000 square feet and would come with furniture and equipment.

Improvements in classroom generation ($15 million) would also be included. This would come with audio, visual, and multimedia refreshments or additions on and/or on campus.

Proposal B of $183,000,000 would be approved for a new comprehensive high school on Yukon Road and Faudree Road. The district bought the 100 acres about two years later for just over $2 million.

The new high school would be 6A and would have a capacity of 2500 to 2800 students. It would have a deck of about 400,000 square feet and would come with furniture and equipment.

The district detailed to leaders that they anticipate the bond will result in a cumulative tax rate of 15 cents and, for a home with a taxable price of $100,000, would equate to a tax backlog of about $12 per month.

The residential asset tax would not accrue for taxpayers over the age of 65, as state law states that the tax rate and the amount paid for an apartment are frozen when the user turns 65, applies for exemption, and is approved through the Ector. The ECIDD grants local taxpayers a 20% exemption on family circle properties, which is the maximum allowed by law.
