Apple will almost hold its annual iPhone launch in September of this year, with the iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max (which may end up being called the iPhone 15 Ultra) succeeding the company’s iPhone 14 lineup.
Apple could also unveil an iPhone 15 Plus in September, continuing the legacy of last year’s iPhone 14 Plus, though that phone will likely offer the same performance, display, and camera ID as its popular sibling.
We’ve detailed the expected iPhone 15 release date, iPhone 15 specs, and iPhone 15 screen sizes elsewhere on TechRadar, however, in this guide, we break down the planned design updates for the new iPhone model.
Leaks surrounding the iPhone 15’s design suggest notable differences between Apple’s upcoming vanilla iPhone and the base iPhone 14.
Chief among the design rumors is the suggestion that all 4 iPhone 15 models will have curved edges, meaning the iPhone 15 may look more like the iPhone 11 than the iPhone 14, changing a directly similar aesthetic to the iPhone 12. and iPhone 13.
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus also get a new camera hit, which is a rumor that’s been corroborated through unofficial renderings of iPhone, based on body specs (see 9to5Mac rendering above).
The popular iPhone 15 also looks set to inherit a key design feature from the iPhone 14 Pro. According to the same Weibo user, who in the past had revealed the lifestyles of the yellow iPhone 14, the iPhone 15 will come with a textured iPhone 14. Professional-style matte glass back panel, instead of the classic glossy back panel used in its predecessor.
Presumably, Apple is making this update to give its next popular style a more premium look, this move could also be tracked in other rear panel tweaks for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max.
On the port front, the iPhone 15 has a USB-C charging port instead of the iPhone 14’s Lightning port (which remains a staple of each and every iPhone since the iPhone 5). The EU has told Apple it wants to charge USB-C charging ports for iPhones starting in 2024, but all the symptoms suggest the company will adopt popular new charging in 2023.
Leaked iPhone 15 mockups received via MacRumors (below) corroborate this suggestion, as do rumors alluding to the phone’s curved edges.
It looks like the dimensions of the iPhone 15 phones will be roughly the same as their iPhone 14 equivalents, although, as mentioned, there will be slight differences in the length of the camera bumps. For reference, the iPhone 14 measures 71. 5 x 146. 7 x 7. 8mm and weighs 172g, while the iPhone 14 Plus measures 78. 1 x 160. 8 x 7. 8mm and weighs 203g.
It’s also worth noting that Apple might be preparing to transfer to eSIM in countries other than the US. The U. S. for the iPhone 15, with eSIM on Apple’s next generation of most productive iPhones in France.
This is great news for all potential iPhone 15 buyers outside the US. U. S. Apple sells the same iPhone models in most of Europe, which means SIM-free iPhones can also reach the UK, Ireland, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal and many other countries.
As with the popular iPhone 15, we’d expect the iPhone 15 Pro to have a similar length and weight to its predecessor, i. e. 147. 5 x 71. 5 x 7. 85mm and 206g, but it can still be seen as a very different device.
We’ve heard from various sources, for example, that the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max may have titanium sides, making them more powerful and lighter than the stainless metal-framed iPhones available lately.
Both devices are also expected to have rounded rear edges, unlike the sharp-angled sides of the iPhone 14 Pro. Apple wasn’t sure about the implementation of this design replacement for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, but leaked versions of the iPhone 15 Pro (below) that appear since those curved sides have emerged, adding credibility to the rumor.
We also hear that the iPhone 15 Pro will have slimmer bezels than the iPhone 14 Pro, which would be a feat on Apple’s part, given that the latter’s bezels are already noticeably thin.
According to some rumors, the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Ultra would also have solid-state volume and force buttons, but Apple analysts later poured water on the claims. The leaks had warned that those buttons would use haptic vibrations to simulate the sensation of being touched, they do not really move, however, this generation is now expected to be presented in the iPhone 16 line.
And finally, as with the popular iPhone 15, the iPhone 15 Pro comes with a USB-C charging port instead of Apple’s Lightning port.
The iPhone 15 Pro Max, or iPhone 15 Ultra as it’s called, will likely take advantage of the same design innovations as its little brother. That means we can expect curved edges, a titanium frame, ultra-thin bezels, and a USB-C port.
We expect the phone to also retain the same length credentials as its predecessor, meaning the iPhone 15 Pro Max will likely measure around 77. 6 x 160. 7 x 7. 85mm. The only design differences between the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max will come from the latter’s impressive camera features.
For example, I heard that the iPhone 15 Pro Max can get a telephoto lens with a variable zoom lens, the kind rumored to be featured on the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, as well as the largest main sensor ever used in an iPhone.
None of those features seem to be aimed at the iPhone 15 Pro, meaning the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s camera network will likely be arranged differently. This incredible generation of photography will make the phone heavier than its predecessor, which weighs 240g.
We also hear that the iPhone 15 Pro Max may have a dual-lens front-facing camera, with the same source saying the phone can only have one tone, the same silver color as the Apple Watch Ultra, if it actually ends up being called the iPhone 15 Ultra.
