“I took care of my father’s: we embraced the generation to survive”

For two decades, Alan Leamy, from Périgord, has been encouraged through the desires of conversion of the life sciences sector and the transformation of the family business circle with technology.

Alan Leamy is the CEO of Perigord, a Dublin-based company that has one of the world’s leading suppliers of labeling illustrations and other facilities to life sciences corporations around the world.

What we have noticed over the past decade is that our industry and our consumers face many challenges, one is sustainability and the other the amount of knowledge about the company’s products that exists in our consumers’ businesses. Today, we have our Global Tagging Art Management System (GLAMS) exchange software to help our clients manage all of their content and assets in a single source. Perigord uses its comprehensive knowledge of packaging, the supply chain and sustainability to help our clients rethink their packaging and to look at their carbon footprint and ways they can reduce it while remaining within their margins.

I joined what was my father’s company, Litho Studios, when I was 17 years old. At the time I did an apprenticeship in graphic reproductions.

During this time I would regularly travel between Ireland and the US. I would often do up to three trips over seven days to transport images that featured on the covers of National Geographic, Time and Life magazines. It was incredible.

I then took over the business from my father in 2002, which was a very different one from what I started in because of technological advancements. When Apple developed the Mac computer and then Photoshop was introduced, it made Litho’s skills redundant.

In the end, we brought the generation into the company and started training employees. It was vital that we embrace the generation rather than run away from it for the company to survive. In 2003, I thought that the Périgord would no longer be a family business circle and from there we replaced brands and expanded into new spaces such as pharmacy and life sciences.

Then jumping to last year, 70% of the company bought through Tech Mahindra and here we are!We are entering a new level of corporate that is essential for its growth. Since the acquisition, we have been able to expand Périgord into new sectors in Ireland, such as customer goods and the marketing departments of pharmaceutical agencies. I can’t wait to see what the long term holds.

For the company to survive, many risky decisions had to be made. One of the risks I took was deciding to leave the realm of a family business circle to focus on scaling the business globally. It’s complicated!

Working with a circle of relatives can be challenging and occasionally there are emotional connections to the company, however, due to the industry we work in and the ever-changing landscape, it was not imaginable to remain a circle of kinship business.
