My access to generational writing began in my freshman year of college. I just went from a major in biochemistry and public fitness to studying human-centered design and engineering and history at the University of Washington.
I had thought about exercising technical functions after college, but I didn’t know anything about what could be gained outside of software engineering and program management.
I enjoyed writing and was an avid educational journalist. Sometime between morning interviews and late-night transcription sessions, I began to see myself as someone seeking to empower underrepresented communities in the media.
While browsing Microsoft’s online page for my first year of internships, I came across an internship offer for an Array user. One point struck me: “Excellent who understands how to use everything from a perfectly placed fragment to an in-depth narration. “
Storytelling and strategy in technology?Sign me up! I submitted my resume describing my paintings as a writing tutor, journalist, and communications intern for a center.
A month later, I had an interview and won the offer. This 2 1/2-month internship marked the beginning of a career as a generation writer.
After graduating in July 2019 with a bachelor’s degree in comparative history and human-centered design and engineering, I began working at Microsoft full-time as a video and video producer. In December, I moved into a position as a product marketing manager.
Here are my for breaking into the generation as a writer.
Communicate the price of your painting experience and how you prepared it for your next role.
In my first interview at Microsoft, I shared my philosophy that quality content is as smart as your readers or users accept it as true to you. While serving as a journalism student, I forged strong partnerships with BIPOC organizations, educators, and researchers. on my college campus covering events, diversity and inclusion initiatives, and the systems they led.
I connected my commitment to serving my network with Microsoft’s purpose of empowering each and every user and organization on the planet and how both purposes were based on accepting as true and maintaining commitment to the other people who engage in their work.
I obviously showed how my comfortable skills made me a candidate for the company.
Also, when talking about transferable skills, try to quantify their impact on other roles. Focus on a tangible measure of how your work has moved the needle.
Perhaps your stories have helped increase the number of perspectives of one or simplified a procedure for managing your production.
It’s talking to your manager or collaborators about the knowledge you can rely on to quantify your impact.
During my first internship at Microsoft, I held two or three meetings per week with other writers, content strategists, and storytellers to learn more about their background.
These relationships helped me locate a colleague who defended me internally when I submitted a momentary internship on her team at Microsoft. This pitch led me to an interview, an internship, and yet my full-time position.
I urge you to use LinkedIn, Twitter, TikTok, or your favorite social media platform to locate tech storytellers and succeed with them.
You can locate other people who are making a career transition, sharing an identity, or having a common contact. Use all the data that connects you to send a personalized email that mentions your common floor and a couple of things you hope to talk about. -in one.
It can even come with a list of the times when it’s loose, so it’s simple to send a calendar invitation once the user has responded.
Often, writing roles in the generation don’t have a “writer” in them.
Use LinkedIn and task alerts to study artistic roles in interested companies; some of the highs it’s not unusual to look for are content strategist, content designer, UX copywriter, and copywriter.
Write a master list of grades based on the task descriptions of those roles. Qualifications would possibly come with elements such as collaboration across disciplines, stakeholder influence, and the use of studies and knowledge for consultant decisions.
Set up task alerts for those positions and create traditional resumes when you’re in a position to apply.
It’s worth noting that the same role may have a different name depending on the company, so keep an eye out for those task forums to see if task names are used interchangeably and continue to add applicable names to your alerts.
Be sure to update LinkedIn, post, and interact with content, especially anything similar to the task descriptions you’ve encountered. This will make it less difficult for recruiters and hiring managers to locate you.
Once this is done, your feedback will be noticed through more people, maximum likely hiring managers or other people in your industry with similar interests.
For example, when I post more about my published stories, speeches, or marketing efforts, I get many more LinkedIn connection requests and posts from recruiters who are excited about my content and need me to work at their company.
I propose to set aside time a week to have interaction or write on LinkedIn.
My non-linear career path with a background in journalism, content strategy, and UX design has been a strength at Microsoft.
Storytelling as a skill is outside of writing functions. This shows you how to sell your experience or concept and why it is commercially viable and worthy of investment.
