HP’s Pavilion line of laptops is rarely better known for its affordable prices than for its high-end specs or features. But the company presents a style that bucks the trend.
This does turn out to be the case of the new HP Pavilion Plus 14-inch, which is a computer with an all-metal chassis, for NVIDIA graphics, and for a high-resolution OLED screen with a refresh rate of 90Hz. . . The HP Pavilion Plus 14 is also the thinnest HP Pavilion computer to date. It will be available this week for $799 or more.
The 3. 1-pound weight measures 12. 34″ x 8. 83″ x 0. 72″ at its thickest point and 0. 65″ at its thinnest point. HP offers two demo panel options:
There is a stereo speaker with B audio.
The ports come with two USB 3. 2 Gen 2 Type-C (10 Gbps) ports, two USB Type-A (5 Gbps) ports, an HDMI 2. 1 port, a headphone jack, and a microSD card reader. The lack of Thunderbolt ports may be one of the few features that obviously imply that this computer is part of the Pavilion family that the higher envy or Spectre ranges.
Under the hood, the computer is available with up to 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory (soldered to the motherboard and not user-scalable), and up to 1TB of PCIe Gen 3 NVMe storage or 512GB of PCIe Gen 4 NVMe storage (this being the scalable user).
HP offers WiFi 6E and Bluetooth 5. 2 wireless options, NVIDIA GeForce MX550 and RTX 2050 discrete graphics options, and five other processor options:
It’s attractive to see PC brands offering processor features ranging from 15 to 45 watts in the same chassis, but that doesn’t seem to be exclusive to HP. Several companies have adopted a similar technique with 12th generation Intel Core processors, for better or worse. , as an advanced cooling formula is needed to burn heat from the hardest processors to acceleration.
HP notes that while all models have two heat pipes and an active cooling system, some models have a dual-fan solution that includes fans that the company says are 36 percent larger than the previous generation and generate 84 percent airflow buildup.
Models with parts that require more power will come with a 90W USB-C power adapter, while low-force configurations will come with a 65W USB-C adapter. All models have the same 51 Wh battery.

I’m starting to worry about being able to avoid having OLED screens on computers. I know they’ve taken a step forward when it comes to recording, but it still turns out that you can’t rely on a computer to last more than four years (depending on usage) before it starts to get annoying (not useless, inconvenient). I can even go so far as to call OLED in the planned obsolescence of a computer.
I myself have wondered about the longevity of OLEDs, because those things are starting to appear everywhere. That said, if they can last five years of use. . . it’s probably enough for a maximum of people.
