The theme of this game could be quarterbacks in new positions looking to become their belonging.
For San Francisco, Sam Darnold and Trey Lance are battling it out for backup frames from Brock Purdy’s 2022 escape. Lance will start the game, but it’s notable that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan spent a lot of time this week praising Darnold.
“This is his first time in this offense, and I’ve been encouraged to see how he’s spitting plays, what he can call them, where he is now compared to the first two days,” Shanahan said of Darnold. It doesn’t look like it’s the first time he’s crossed it,” Shanahan added. “He’s getting better every week, he’s getting more comfortable and I’m excited to see him in some of those games. “
On the other hand, the Raiders have a new quarterback in Jimmy Garoppolo, who will most likely play a series or two against his former team.
“We haven’t made any definitive decisions about anybody,” coach Josh McDaniels said Friday before the game. “We’re going to communicate about it tonight. “
In addition to Garoppolo, players to watch out for the Raiders are quarterback Aidan O’Connell, tightrope Michael Mayer, tight end Christopher Smith II and linebacker Amari Burney.
“It’s just an opportunity, number one, to compete,” McDaniels said of the preseason. “I think it’s a vital component of that because I think it makes everyone better and you see a competitive fire from everybody. Secondly, I think it’s an opportunity for you to check your fundamentals, your discipline, the main points and the techniques that you’ve been applying for months as opposed to yourself, bags and shells and all those things, and now you have a chance to pass. out there and kind of see where you are.
These two last met in the preseason in August 2011, when the 49ers won 17-3.
