Hardware retailers are struggling to keep up with the demand for snow removal equipment.

COTTONWOOD HEIGHTS — A series of heavy snowstorms across the state this week has left hardware retailers busy as others scramble to buy snow-shoveling equipment.

Things were hectic in the back room of the Ace hardware store in Cottonwood Heights as snow plows and shovels were ready to meet demand.

“We’re constantly gathering them together and they’re coming out,” an Ace Hardware worker told KSL-TV.

John Harris, the store’s owner, said he analyzed more than 500 samples of melted ice this week.

“We’ve had kind of a dry spell, and now that it’s here, other people are panicking a little bit,” Harris said.

Customer Rebecca Hess said she needed to melt snow and shovel because the ones she had at home weren’t smart enough.

“Based on the information, I’ve heard it’s going to continue snowing,” Hess said.

Harris said there are also pieces that other people choose that you wouldn’t think about until you needed them.

“Ice scraper for the windshield. How about a windshield washer for the car?Antifreeze, jumper cables, firewood, logs. We sell all heating sources, electric heaters, propane heaters,” he said.

Harris said it’s hard to expect how many snow removal devices you’ll need because you never know what Mother Nature will bring.

“What I’m saying is, we know the grass will turn green in the spring, so it’s easy, but the winter is tough in Utah. I’ve lived here my whole life. It’s just about taking risks,” he said.
