Play NYC will return for the fourth year next month and offer a new format and push the developers of black games, as announced in a press release.
Play NYC 2020, which normally takes place in New York, will be completely online for the first time this year as a reaction to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. This year’s Graffiti Games initiative, through which developers create a game commissioned through the Playcrafting organizer, is also up-to-date at the right time.
In an ongoing effort to magnify the diverse perspectives, Graffiti Games will highlight five black game expanders who will get a $5,000 grant to expand their own game. This initiative is made imaginable this year with the help of Rockstar Games.
The paintings of the following developers will be featured in this year’s Play NYC 2020 graffiti games:
Andrew Augustin, founder of Notion Games
Ricardo Lee, founder of Nifiystudios
Derrick Fields, senior designer at Waking Oni
● Cara Hillstock, narrative designer at Illus SeedGame and Twitch affiliate
Michelle Senteio, development experience engineer at Looking Glass Factory
Dan Butchko, the founder and CEO of Playcrafting, commented on this year’s Play NYC.
“We launched the Graffiti Games initiative in the first Play NYC in 2017 to magnify the voice of game creators through controlled games that reshape the live conference area like a graffiti on a wall. Since then, we have brought immigrant and LGBTQ developers gently through this “We are revered for magnifying the critical voices of black game creators through this year’s Graffiti Games,” Butchko said. “It is more critical than ever for Play NYC to make the critical contributions of the black network to gaming art and culture in New York and beyond.
