If you want additional evidence that generative AI still has a long way to go before we can fully embrace it, look no further than Google’s Generative Search Experience (SGE) search results. Google announced the AI-powered search feature in May, and soon after access was rolled out in Search Labs. SGE provides AI-generated information throughout search results, and while this can be useful, it’s much less appealing when it redirects users to malicious websites.
BleepingComputer allowed browser notifications from various sites to see what was going on. They began receiving spam on their computers with classified ads for tech scams, fake giveaways, and a fake McAfee antivirus alert about malware detection.

In some cases, the redirects have even pushed malicious browser extensions that can hijack searches and other harmful behaviors.
“We continue to update our complex anti-spam systems to prevent spam from accessing search, and we use those anti-spam shields to protect SGE,” Google told BleepingComputer after learning about the sites. “We have taken steps as a component of our policies to remove shared examples, which gave the impression of consultations. “
