Google simplifies Android app expansion in Chrome OS

Google has launched a new site dedicated to helping developers find and access the tools, resources and best practices they need to adapt their Android and web apps for Chrome OS.

ChromeOS.dev is available lately in English and Spanish with other languages to come and the new site will serve as a portal for developers looking for the latest news, product announcements, technical documentation and examples of popular app codes.

Google is working to increase the number of apps available for Chrome OS, as between March and June this year, Chromebook sales increased by 127% year-on-year. At the same time, the search giant also recently announced that it would extend the final deadline for Chrome applications on Windows, Mac, and Linux through June 2021.

To make it less difficult for developers to build Android apps that use Chromebooks, Devices compatible with Acer, Asus, Dell, HP, and Lenovo can now run a full edition of the Android emulator. This allows developers to verify their apps on any Android edition and device without the need for genuine hardware to do so. Android app developers can even simulate places on maps and other sensor knowledge to see how well their app works with movements, orientations, and environmental conditions.

At the same time, Google has now made it less difficult to create and verify Android apps on a single machine. Developers running Chrome OS M81 or later can deploy and verify apps directly on their Chromebooks without having to use Developer Mode or physically connect other USB devices.

Google has also performed default checks on the Android lint tool to help developers identify and troubleshoot common coding issues. Lately, this feature is available to check the Canary channel and can be used for demonstrating programs on larger screens, such as locked and non-resizable devices in portrait mode.

“From day one, our purpose has been to help developers of all grades create simple, resilient and secure application reports for all platforms. As our new truth creates a greater desire for useful and exciting programs on big-screen devices, we are working hard to streamline the procedure by making Chrome OS more versatile, customizable, and intuitive.”
