For a few months now, Google has been talking about Android 12L, an upcoming edition of Android that points to how the operating formula works on larger-screen devices like tablets and foldable phones. So far, most of those changes have focused on interface tweaks, however, today at Google I/O, the company also heard news about how to get better app functionality on larger screens.
Google says more than 20 of its apps will be redesigned and optimized for pills, which automatically makes Android touches much more useful. These come with YouTube Music, Google Maps, and Messages. YouTube Music has a redesigned playback screen that takes advantage of the extra value. screen space, while Messages has a multi-column view to temporarily transfer between conversations. Google also says that third-party apps like Facebook, TikTok and Zoom will soon be updated to optimize them for large screens as well. If Google can send more big developers like these, the Android pill ecosystem gets great merits.
Google also says there are 270 million active users who are already big-screen devices, so there’s a decent amount of other people who will be able to take advantage of those updates right away. To locate them, Google Play is also undergoing a major screen redesign that will highlight apps designed for tablets.
