Previously, the popular Safe Browsing coverage mode used a list stored on your device to check if a site or record was potentially harmful. This list is updated every 30 to 60 minutes, but we’ve found that an average malicious site exists for less than 10 minutes.
Now, the popular coverage mode for Chrome on desktop and iOS will check in real-time for sites opposed to Google’s server-side list of known malicious sites. If we suspect that a site poses a threat to you or your device, please see a warning with more information. By verifying sites in real-time, we expect to block another 25% of phishing attempts.
Fortunately, it turns out that the company has made sure that your browsing, even with this server-side feature, is privacy-friendly. Google says: “The new feature, which will also roll out to Android later this month, uses encryption and other privacy features. -Improve techniques to ensure that no one, including Google, knows what you are visiting. “
