Google today announced the Google Safe Browsing update with real-time URLs for Chrome users from malicious websites. Safe Browsing is designed to resist phishing attacks, malware, and unwanted software by verifying URLs instead of a master list.
Standard coverage for Chrome previously used a list stored on the device and updated every 30 to 60 minutes, but now websites will be verified in real-time unlike Google’s server-side list of known malicious sites. Google says it plans to block 25% more phishing attempts with this change.
Google partners with Fastly to operate an Oblivious HTTP privacy server between Chrome and Safe Browsing to keep users private. Safe Browsing doesn’t see the user’s IP address, and Safe Browsing checks are combined with checks sent through other Chrome users.
Chrome users can also opt for Enhanced Protection, a safe browsing mode that uses AI to block attacks and provides coverage against malicious Chrome extensions.
Google also recently updated password verification on iOS devices. In addition to notifying users about compromised passwords, it will also flag weak and reused passwords.
Chrome is a free browser that can be used as an alternative to Safari on Mac, iPhone, and iPad.
