Google Bard Gemini Update: We Tested It for Travel

Google this week launched a new edition of the generative AI generation that it says rivals ChatGPT. The generation, Gemini Pro, replaced the previous generation that powers the Bard chatbot.

Google said in a blog post that Gemini Pro outperformed GPT-3. 5, which launched in April and powers OpenAI’s ChatGPT loose edition, on six of the eight industry-standard benchmarks.

Google says Gemini Pro is “much more capable” than its previous AI acting style, such as “understanding, summarizing, reasoning, coding, and planning. “

However, the generation has come under fire in recent days, with users posting significant errors on social media in some of Bard’s answers to questions. Google’s admission to simulating a Gemini demo drew further criticism.

But let’s see how the new edition of Bard accomplishes the task.

Back in September, we tested Bard for a while after adding several extensions to access real-time knowledge across Google’s products: Maps, Flights, Hotels, YouTube, and Workspace, which includes Gmail, Docs, and Drive.

Spoiler: It’s not an exaggeration to say that Bard is useful in some cases, but the experimental generation still has its limitations.

Younger generations plan their trips through videos made by creators on TikTok and Youtube.

Once the YouTube extension was activated, I asked Bard to locate influencer videos about New York’s hidden gems. The answer came here with the referenced YouTube videos, which can be played in the chatbot window.

Next, I asked Bard to summarize the main problems with each video, which was about 12 minutes long at most. And it worked. The chatbot is able to “watch” five videos and offer the main problems of each of them.

The user can also click on the video to open it in a new tab on YouTube, but wait for the ad to finish before clicking; Otherwise, a window will open just for the ad, not the main video.

I asked Bard to create an itinerary from Thursday night through Sunday afternoon in New York City, featuring “unique art, upscale bars, public art, and musical events. “

It necessarily responded to the demand, sharing three versions of itineraries that call the destinations and detail what they are. While Bard can share real-time data about flights and hotels, it doesn’t have the ability to do the same for paid occasions or activities.

In Bard’s previous test, the reaction to a similar spark included links to sites, including Wikipedia, that were sometimes unnecessary. In the latest test, Bard did not provide any links to any of the places referenced in the itinerary, however, it is still a good starting point for making travel plans.

In particular, a single spark generated an entire itinerary that got straight to the point but provided enough context. This simplicity can be said for all the AI models released this year.

I asked for flight options from Raleigh to New York City for next Thursday and hotel options for Thursday to Sunday. The links to several flight and hotel options were fully accurate, including the information about the airline, time, and price.

Even though I asked for hotel options for three nights, the chatbot presented roundtrip flight options for a weeklong trip. After clarifying that the return flight should be on Sunday, the chatbot presented new options.

Bard doesn’t have a specific extension for places to eat yet, but it can recommend places to eat and much more thanks to the Maps extension. The effects are presented with an interactive Google map and links to recommendations for places to eat.

Although the query was made in the same chat as the New York itinerary, it included restaurants founded in my current location in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. After clarifying that the tips have been about New York City, the chatbot generated new responses.

With the Workspace extension, Bard can access the user’s Gmail account. I have flights booked this month from Mexico to Michigan in the U.S., and asked the chatbot to remind me of the departure times.

He replied with the exact times and locations to the data extracted from the confirmation emails. It also included links to emails opened in Gmail.

When you first asked me about my flights later this month, the chatbot introduced the features of checking my emails about flights already booked. For this reason, it is mandatory to ask the chatbot in particular to check your emails if that is the intention. After clarification, the chatbot presented the appropriate information.

I asked Bard to create a copy of an Airbnb directory for a two-bedroom, two-bathroom home in Traverse City, Michigan. Bard presents 3 drafts in its responses, which is especially useful when generating this type of content.

One of the disorders is that it makes assumptions that may not be true. A draft talked about the space having a washer and dryer, Bard hadn’t been told to come with this information.

It’s probably more productive to present more main points beforehand about such issues, but the chatbot will take the feedback into account and rewrite a draft with the applicable changes, making it as short or as long as necessary.

At the very least, generating copy in Bard can be used as a time-saver or for inspiration, especially if writing is not the user’s strong suit.

The original and evolution of the verbal exchange can be seen in the video below.
