The Detroit Lions will host the New York Giants in the opening game of the 2023 preseason at Ford Field on Friday, August 7 at 7 p. m. m. Y.
If you live in the Giants or Lions Market, the game will be televised on a local channel, which varies depending on your city. If you live outside of those markets, the game will not be televised live by the NFL yet.

As is the case in the preseason, young players from either group will compete against players from their respective position groups for a spot on each team’s final roster. Detroit, in particular, has inspired many undrafted rookies in past preseasons. For thirteen consecutive years now (2010-22), the Lions have had at least one undrafted rookie free agent on the team’s 53-man roster to start the season. We’ll see if that continues this year.
One Lions player who will actually see the box a lot this offseason is second-year receiver Jameson Williams, who played a minimum of just six games last year while recovering from a torn ACL. Lions coach Dan Campbell said having the talented receiver — whose two touchdowns last season rushed for more than 40 yards — as much as possible in the box will be key.
“It’s going to be huge,” Campbell said Aug. 2. It will be imperative. We’re going to fill it with a bunch of replays of the game. He desires that, you know? While practicing. And I tell you, as with everyone, the more reps he does, the more time he spends on a task, the more back-to-back workouts and reps he can do together, he’s just going to grow, in fact, I’m in it.
On the other hand, the Giants’ sprawling receivers room is more than a little crowded, and this offseason could be what dilutes it a bit. With Isaiah Hodgins, Wan’Dale Robinson, Parris Campbell, Darius Slayton and Jalin Hyatt as team favorites at the position, several more will battle for the remaining 1-2 spots. Cole Beasley, David Sills, Jamison Crowder, Collin Johnson and Sterling Shepard are all on the intensity chart, so this war will be attractive to watch.
There’s also the added bonus of spotting players from the other team, which Giants coach Brian Daboll noticed before the game.
“You take a look at a totally different list,” Daboll said. “So I know our scouting branch will be here and compare the players, just our players how they do it, but also the Detroit players. I think it works well for us.
These two groups have only met twice in pre-season since 1966, once in 2008 and 10 years later in 2018. They shared those matches. They also fulfilled the normal season last year, with the Lions winning 31-18 at MetLife Stadium.
