Gemini Still Comes to Google Messages (for some users)

Google has teased its goal of injecting its Gemini AI into just about everything it can, with the exception of the entry-level Pixel 8, which it says has some hardware limitations that save it from the most recent edition of Gemini. The latest tactic to get Gemini to process is through Google Messages.

This launch is rarely unexpected, as Google officially showed off the addition of Gemini to Messages about a month ago. However, now, despite everything, it has started to be available to some beta users of Google Messages, and here’s what you can expect from the new integration.

For starters, it’s only available to RCS-enabled beta testers who are at least 18 years old and own a Pixel 6 or later, Pixel Fold, Galaxy S22 or later, Galaxy Z Flip, or Galaxy Z Fold. Not all other devices are eligible for Gemini in Google Messages yet. Google also says it wants to set your phone’s language to English in places where Gemini is available in Messages, or in French if you’re in Canada.

Once you’re in beta and have Gemini, you’ll be able to do a number of things with the AI chatbot, adding talking to the bot to get insights. You can reply to Gemini using text messages or symbols, and you can even use extensions in your Gemini chats.

If you need help writing messages, all you have to do is ask Gemini and they will provide you with a correct reaction that you can edit and then send as you see fit. You’ll also be able to comment directly in the Messages app via Press and hold the reply you want to review and then decide by thumbs up or down to hint at what kind of reply it was.

Google hasn’t yet indicated whether it will allow Gemini Advanced users to access its premium features in Messages, so we’ll have to wait until we have more data on the AI feature before we can be sure. But, at least for now, you can sign up for the beta version of Google Messages and check out the feature as long as you meet the requirements defined above.
