Gaming laptops, as a segment, grew nearly 67% year-over-year in India in the 2020-21 calendar year, driven by strong demand in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, according to data released by GfK. More and more people are buying gaming laptops now, more than ever, and brands like Dell are pleased to bring new innovations, some of which also don’t charge much. In the wake of the launch of the high-end Alienware x15 and m15 R7, Dell will provide two more laptops, this time as a component of its budget-focused G-series portfolio. These are the special editions G15 5520 and G15 5521 (SE). The idea, clearly, is to provide something for everyone.
The value of G15 and G15 SE in India starts at Rs 85,990. These laptops are supplied with 12th Gen Intel Core processors and Nvidia GeForce RTX 30 series graphics cards, all combined in a nice premium magnesium alloy chassis. However, the interesting thing is that they are very inspired by Alienware and bring some of their main functions at a higher price. In a way, the G15 and G15 SE are Alienware laptops designed for the general public. Anand Subramanya, Director, Product Marketing, Consumer and Small Business, Dell Technologies India, introduces us to new laptops, their features, inventions and more, in this exclusive interview with Saurabh Singh of Financial Express. Extracts.
What motivates Dell as a brand? What makes it different?
Our confidence is that generation is the engine of human progress. The past two years have given a boost to the importance of the PC as a favorite device that provides the ultimate complete user experience, whether it’s learning, entertainment, or gaming. In fact, it helped us grow phenomenally. Last year, in the fourth quarter, we grew 64% year over year. This is the kind of transformation we’ve noticed in the market where consumers are looking for their productivity by employing the PC as a device and we’ve been at the forefront.
For over 25 years, we’ve been in the gaming business, we’re at the forefront of innovation, and we’re shaping the industry with Alienware as a brand. Our philosophy is that the visitor deserves to have as much in their gaming environment as possible, and it is also the tenants who we integrate into our G-series products.
— What is the concept of G-series gaming laptops?
Gambling has increased particularly in the last two years, especially during the pandemic period. What it has replaced and what we have also observed personally is that it has not only evolved in the cities of point 1, but [now] it is also followed in point 2 and 3 cities. For this reason, there are many adjustments in terms of visitor demographics. If you’re someone who switches from mobile gaming to PC gaming and looking for a bigger screen, better controls, and higher performance, the G-Series wallet is for you.
— What are some of the features of the new special editions G15 5520 and G15 5521 (SE)?
With the G15 and G15 SE, we try to prioritize 3 main aspects. One is performance. We have the newest 12th generation Intel processors and graphics up to RTX 3070Ti. We put a lot of effort into the design and cooling system. Thermal control is done through Alienware design in which we optimize cooling with a double air intake, a thin fan blade, copper tubes and 4 strategically located vents.
Another attractive aspect of these laptops is the Game Shift technology. Pressing the Fn and F9 keys activates a dynamic functionality mode in the formula where the processor works harder to give you greater functionality and enthusiasts run at another speed to stay away from thermals. We’ve also incorporated the command center of our Alienware machines into the G-series with those laptops. This allows you to tailor the hardware to each game you play.
On the G15 SE, we will offer a slim three-sided bezel and a display up to QHD and 240 Hz where it will have a color gamut of almost 99%.
“So would it be calling them Alienware to the masses?”
Yes, right.
— How do you design a profitable product like this, the ones that have to be uploaded and the ones that have to be ignored?
When we design a product, we design it based on visitor feedback. There are other forums where we pay attention to them. We have concentrated groups. So, it’s not so much like saying we have a tray and decide what to upload or not, but we expand the things our customers would want. To move to the BIOS, you want to have a lot of technological wisdom to overclock. In some products, this isn’t even possible, however, on a client laptop, offering a click to a visitor actually helps you get a concept of how well your PC is performing.
— Could you tell us a little about the thermals of the new G-series laptops?
At Alienware, we have something called Cryo-Tech cooling, which belongs to us. There we use independently controlled fans to cool and burn the heat. We also have our own CPU vapor chamber, where we use fast elements that help improve thermal resistance through almost 20-25%. Here are some of the cutting-edge technologies we’ve incorporated into our recently unveiled Alienware X14. Now, when we delve into G-series design, we use our learned classes from Alienware’s product design, and then explain how to integrate this thermal control into a customer product. Lessons learned from Alienware also help us design the G Series.
— Tell us about some of your technical initiatives.
From our point of view, our service and infrastructure has been one of the most productive in the sense that we are offering a wide diversity of facilities to our visitors. When we review our products, they all come with some sort of next business day service. . We provide the service on site. In some of our premium products, we also have what we call our premium so that a visitor can get hardware and software advantages 24/7 with minimal waiting time.
— Are consumers in favor of scalability in gaming laptops? Is that something you’re in?
Scalability as a thing comes into play, as you move up the chain. If you use a cell phone for your gaming experience and more and more games are cloud-centric and online, the hardware that arrives today is future-proof in the sense that it can satisfy the visitor’s desire for the next 3 or 4 years. In the long run, as the visitor switches to games that require more hardware, they have the option to move from the G-series to Alienware. In the G series, they also have a selection of graphics cards that can satisfy your desires. On the computer as a form, scalability within the formula does not happen. Do other people want to upgrade their computer parts or replace them or do something? The answer is, notArray
