Former Austrian Chancellor Bierlein dies

VIENNA – Former Austrian Chancellor Brigitte Bierlein, who led an interim period from June 2019 to January 2020, died Monday.

Bierlein, Austria’s first female chancellor, died “a few days before her 75th birthday, after a brief but serious illness,” Austria’s Constitutional Court said in a statement.

Bierlein was Vice-President of the Court of Justice from 2003 to 2018 and President from February 2018 until she was appointed Federal Chancellor in June 2019. He led an interim government for seven months after the government of his predecessor Sebastian Kurz fell due to a corruption scandal.
