Former Amazon and Flexexport Executive Running for Texas Governor?

Flexport Inc. CEO Dave Clark is leaving the startup after a year at the company, ushering in the return of founder Ryan Petersen and highlighting the pressure on logistics startups after a pandemic boom.

In a memo sent Wednesday, Clark wrote, “Today, Ryan and I discussed his preference for refocusing on developing the core shipping business. Given this, I believe he is in the best position to lead the company in this direction. “

The news came as a marvel in tech circles. Last Tuesday, Clark posted on LinkedIn his goal to speak next week in Seattle at an “exclusive launch event” for Flexport. It also followed a major announcement in May, in which Flexport agreed to gain Shopify Inc. ‘s logistics unit. for a 13% stake in the startup.

Clark joined Flexport from Amazon. com Inc. last year, first as co-executive director and then as executive director. Previously, he spent two decades in the ranks of the e-commerce giant, rising to the position of CEO of its global client business and earning the nickname “The Sniper. “

But at Flexport, Clark struggled to leave Amazon, a much larger company, according to a user familiar with the matter who asked not to be known while discussing user information. Companies have other models: Amazon is primarily a self-service business: it’s based on its and offers little human interaction between the company and its customers. Flexport, on the other hand, demanded more contact and business knowledge with customers, the user said.

Clark was infuriated with complaints about his taste in Flexport and announced his resignation soon after, the user said.

On Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal informed Clark of another imaginable request: The newspaper reported that Clark was contemplating campaigning for Texas governor, citing anonymous sources.

Clark, who moved with his family to Texas before leaving Amazon, also sparked speculation among some Seattle colleagues at the time that he would hold political office.

A Flexport representative did not comment and thanked Clark for his leadership over the past year. Clark responded to requests for comment.

After leaving Flexport, Petersen announced in July that he had joined Peter Thiel-backed venture capital firm Founders Fund as a partner. On Wednesday, he posted on X, the platform formerly Twitter: “I’m back!!”

Flexport is one of the largest startups in the country, having raised more than $2 billion in investments and achieving a valuation of $8 billion. Earlier this year, Flexport announced it would cut 20% of its workforce, which LinkedIn said numbered around 3,000. At the same time, Clark and Petersen spoke of a decline in shipping volumes following a pandemic surge.

Trucking companies like Flexport have had record years during the pandemic: Petersen said their profits would amount to $5 billion last year, but they faced a balance sheet in 2023 as shipping capacity outpaced customers’ demand for goods, causing freight rates to fall.

The global goods industry could simply contribute to the recession, Oxford Economics said in a study note on Wednesday.
