Crews from five stations were called to a blaze at an allotment site in Sunderland.
The fire broke out at the site just off Southwick Road and Keir Hardie Way at just after midday on Friday.
A spokesperson from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “We currently have crews from Sunderland Central, Marley Park, South Shields, Hebburn and Gateshead at a fire at allotments at an allotment site at Southwick Road and Keir Hardie Way.
“Crews arrived at 12.05pm and the incident is currently ongoing. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus are using a hose reel and main jet to extinguish the blaze.”
The spokesperson also reported that there was a lot of smoke in the area and residents living nearby were asked to keep their windows and doors shut during the incident.
Crews remain at the scene and people have been urged to avoid the area.
