When shopping for groceries online, there are many attractive offers on trendy graphics hardware. Of course, if you’re like [Dawid] and bought a GTX1050 Ti for $48 from Wish, you probably think it’s too smart to be true. Of course, you’d be right.
[Dawid] points out early on that the packaging in which the card is delivered is unusual. Although it is covered by the NVIDIA and GeForce brands, there is no note of the style number or even the series in general. The card is packed unstretched in bubble wrap, loose to bounce during transport. During installation, the card looks like a GTX1050 Ti, but refuses to work well with NVIDIA drivers and causes a blue screen of death.
Upon disassembly, it becomes apparent that the board is just a poorly manufactured GTS450 Revision 2, more than five generations older than the board under which it was announced. Due to the mismatch between the actual hardware and the card signals, the drivers can’t paint very well with the adapter.
For those who have been scammed, there is hope. [Phil] has had fun with several of those cards, which also incorrectly sign his actual material. The cards do not work with NVIDIA’s NVFlash tool. Instead, they must be updated manually with an EEPROM scheduler. Once the cards are updated with a correct BIOS, they can be used with the right drivers and will work fine, but with much less functionality than advertised.
