Expect next-gen graphics to incorporate GDDR7 memory.
On Wednesday, Micron’s CEO said the company would release the improved GPU memory next year. “We plan to introduce our next-generation G7 product at our industry-leading 1-beta node in the first part of calendar year 2024,” said Sanjay Mehrotra. in a call for benefits.
The company is already a major supplier of GDDR6 and GDDR6X video memory, both of which have been used in graphics cards from AMD and Nvidia. Therefore, there is a strong possibility that GPU manufacturers, as well as newcomer Intel, will incorporate the generation for their next graphics cards. (Samsung is the developer of GDDR memory, adding GDDR7. )
Micron has yet to detail its own GDDR7 technology, but long-life graphics cards with enhanced memory support buy and display detailed photographs and textures in higher resolutions: 1440p, 4K and more.
In Samsung’s case, the company’s GDDR7 memory is designed to deliver movement speeds of 36 Gbps, compared to GDDR6’s 24 Gbps. Memory designer Cadence adds that GDDR7 will use PAM3 encoding so that memory can operate at 36 Gbps according to pin. Coding, on the other hand, will require the adoption of new memory controllers and interfaces between chips.
Although GRR7 has been announced for next year, Nvidia says it could delay the launch of next-generation RTX graphics cards for consumers. – used in the newer RTX 4000 series – will only arrive in 2025, rather than the planned fall 2024 date.
