By the end of 2024, Apple’s popular iPhone SE will be removed from key markets in Europe. Still, mid-range iOS smartphone enthusiasts know the new year will bring them something special. . . a replacement iPhone SE that’s older than it was; bigger, more powerful and faster.
Apple will continue to update the existing iPhone SE when the new style arrives. Without a doubt, Tim Cook and his team would have liked to keep the iPhone SE presented in 2022 on sale for another 4 or five months, until the arrival of the 2025 version. Unfortunately, the European Union’s mandate for USB -C being the universal charging port for customers’ electronic devices has put an end to that.
The 2022 iPhone SE, as well as the iPhone 14 family introduced the same year, are the oldest iPhone phones recently released through Apple. These are also the latest iPhones that come with the Lightning port for charging. If products can be sold, Apple will prevent shipments until December 31, 2024 to comply with regulations that will take effect on January 1, 2025.
Since it was launched, the iPhone SE has been rated highly in consumer satisfaction surveys, although this year saw Samsung’s Galaxy hardware match Apple’s iPhone hardware. When the next iPhone SE arrives, Apple will hope that the new smartphone will continue to score highly with consumers. Given the features we can expect, that shouldn’t be too much of an ask.
The existing iPhone SE was introduced in 2022 and is powered by Apple’s A15 Bionic chip. At the time, this matched the existing styling of the iPhone 13 and allowed the SE to be presented as an equivalent to the base iPhone line. The main iPhone line has been updated every year, but the iPhone SE still comes with a fair design. on a three year old chip.
Since Apple relies on Apple Intelligence in its marketing campaign, it would be unlikely that the iPhone SE would launch without iOS’s generative AI suite. This will require the newer A18 processor in the specs, which will bring the SE logo back on par with the mainline.
In addition to the advanced chipset to meet the requirements of generative AI, Apple will need to develop the memory of the iPhone SE. The iPhone 16 saw a larger-than-expected memory buildup when it launched in September 2024. While this benefited Apple Intelligence, it also advanced the entire iOS environment, allowing for faster switching between apps and more running memory for programs control.
The user experience of the next iPhone SE will include this speed increase.
Speaking to Forbes contributor David Phelan, Apple CEO Tim Cook is confident that this current wave of AI-influenced iPhones, along with the upcoming iPhone SE, has a huge chance of having a definitive impact on its life:
“Artificial intelligence is a horizontal generation in the sense that it will affect everything in your life over time. It will replace everything. Because it will be like having an assistant, preparing things for which you would have needed more time, to lose yourself to spend more time pulling the thread of your interest or creating or following your passion”.
That’s true from the nearly $2,000 iPhone 16 Pro Max to the mid-range iPhone SE. Apple has worked to keep the price of iPhones from rising between generations, which means Cook’s potential could be available for as little as $430.
While the existing iPhone SE will leave the scene in two weeks, Apple is expected to launch the iPhone SE in the first part of 2025, potentially as early as March, but in time for the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June.
