EU leader calls on Apple CEO Tim Cook to open up hardware and ecosystem

European industry leader Thierry Breton publicly called on Apple CEO Tim Cook to open up the company’s hardware and software ecosystem to his competition (via Reuters).

After a face-to-face meeting with Cook that same day in Brussels, Belgium, Breton told Reuters:

The next task for Apple and other big tech companies, according to the DMA (Digital Markets Act), is to open their doors to competitors. Whether it’s e-wallets, browsers or app stores, consumers of an Apple iPhone deserve to be able to take advantage. of competitive installations presented through a diversity of suppliers.

The EU’s Digital Markets Act aims to reduce the strength of big tech companies. Platforms designated as “gatekeepers” will now be prohibited from prioritizing their own installations over those of their competitors. Earlier this month, Apple’s App Store, Safari and iOS were officially classified as gatekeepers. Apple is expected to upload apps for side download on the App Store on iPhones and iPads in Europe via an update to iOS 17 due to DMA requirements.

Breton went on to criticize Apple’s argument that security and privacy are the reasons it protects its closed ecosystem. “European regulation encourages innovation, compromising security and privacy,” Breton added. After the discussion, Cook visited a local Apple store in Brussels today:

Apple declined to respond to Breton’s latest comments.
