Facebook blocks posts from the hashtag #SavetheChildren.
In early August 2020, social media users reported that Facebook had banned posts with the hashtag #SavetheChildren, leading Snopes readers to ask if censorship had taken up position and why the platform would decide to block such posts.
While Facebook temporarily disabled posts #SavetheChildren that violated the network’s criteria or showed depictions of child abuse, the platform did not permanently ban the hashtag. This is outdated.
Facebook posts #SavetheChildren reportedly banned or censored from August 5, 2020 to the early hours of the next day. Posts and users reported that statuses may still be shared, but posts that used the hashtag did not show results. Instead, they returned a warning that the message violated network standards.
In an email to Snopes, Facebook showed that the hashtag had been disabled.
“We temporarily blocked the hashtag because it was streaming poor quality content,” wrote Facebook spokesman Dami Oyefeso. “The hashtag has been restored ever since and we will continue to monitor content that violates our network standards.”
A search for Snopes for the mobile and desktop versions of Facebook revealed that the hashtag had been reset from this post. The effects of the studies included a variety of incorrect information and distorted facts and occasions around paedophilia networks, as well as potentially triggering photographs of young people abused, exploited or presented under conditions suggesting sexual exploitation.
Social media users speculated that the transient deactivation of the hashtag because many relevant photos with #SavetheChildren violated the Facebook community criteria, which have an express justification for any child-like content that includes “photographs illustrating non-sexual abuse. of children, regardless of the intention to share.”
Some that some social media users have abused the hashtag to spread anti-mask sentiment amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Several influential people on social media have argued that young people dressed in masks may face a greater threat of kidnapping or less likely to be known after being kidnapped. Others have connected the mask’s guarantees to “the world’s elite and its fetish for young people.”
