An online page called Real or Not requires visitors to discern the authenticity of photographs. It’s a clever quiz that presents you with 15 photographs and asks you to judge whether each one is “real” or “artificial. ” When you complete the game, the site will rate you and you better get the highest score; otherwise. . .
… You can check back. The site encourages you to check back with a new batch of images, prompting you to improve your detection skills.
The intrigue doesn’t end there. Smith’s promotion of this raises questions about his ownership and Microsoft’s involvement, which remain a mystery.
The move follows a report from Microsoft highlighting the risks of “deepfake” AI images, which have gained a lot of attention due to their implications for misinformation and online safety. The urgency of addressing this factor is reflected in Smith’s call for a collaborative effort between the public and private sectors to identify regulatory frameworks and policies that promote the culpable progression and use of AI.
The move comes on the heels of pop star Taylor Swift’s viral photographs, which sparked controversy and debate over the moral use of AI to create convincing but false representations of individuals.
Despite the allegations, Microsoft clarified that its symbol author, Designer AI, was not used to generate those symbols.
