Despite Game Pass, “Starfield”, the best -selling September game

Starfield sales were always going to be a question mark, given how many players would be able to play the game from day one on Xbox or PC Game Pass instead of buying it. But Starfield has performed strongly on Steam, and we have new data from the NPD (now Circana) that yes, it did sell well despite the Game Pass “giveaway.”

The full list (NPD Windows Central) shows which competitors were among the top 10:

So, a few things to keep in mind here. This is all the more impressive because it’s exclusive to Xbox and PC, unlike other games, which exclude the entire PlayStation player base. Plus, with around 30 million Game Pass subscribers right now, there are plenty of other people in the Xbox ecosystem who don’t want to buy the game at all. So, this total number is made up of people who bought it on Xbox outside of Game Pass or people who bought it on Steam, which is a considerable amount, considering the cost of concurrent players.

However, of course, you can also go on the other side. This is an important game of Bethesda, which we only get approximately every five years, even if it is a new and not tested IP. In addition, this is the NPD where there are more xbox sales in the US. In addition, there were no successful competitions this month, apart from basically sports games and Mortal Kombat. The end of the list shows that Hogwarts Legacy continues his career as one of the most popular games of the year, has largely been ignored by many due to so many other important and high performance releases.

Starfield is also far from the best fit of the year. There are dozens more, and it is at the back of the diversity of the main Bethesda games. But it sells and its player numbers are high, which is transparent from this knowledge and others that we can extract from places like Steam.
