An organization in India has been attacked an average of 1,189 times consistent with the week in the more than 6 months, to 465 cyberattacks consistent with the organization worldwide.
According to Sundar N Balasubramanian, Managing Director, India and SAARC of Check Point Software Technologies Ltd, one of the world’s leading providers of cybersecurity solutions, the Covid-19 outbreak has led to an increase in cyberattacks.
Weekly, 11% of organizations (in India) are affected by cellular malware, compared to 4.5% worldwide. Approximately 7% of companies are affected by banking malware every week. The corresponding overall figure is 2.7%. Ransomware and phishing are not unusual attacks, with mobile phones being the most vulnerable device.
In an interview with BusinessLine, Balasubramanian talks about the cybersecurity landscape in India, the nature of the attacks, the identity of the vulnerabilities, others. Extracts:
What have been the cybersecurity trends so far since the pandemic ended since it happened?
Around March and April, ciOs were working to accommodate house paintings. During the first and last week of April, fear moved to appropriate security protocols to be followed. The next phase focused more on the protective posture. In mid-June, there was a challenge to construction and we saw a definite change to the cloud. In June and July, when other people agreed that Covid would be there to stay; (have begun) to realign businesses, building infrastructure and security, at least in the medium term.
Have cyberattacks increased and what is the nature of those attacks?
First, we have noticed that attacks in India double the global average weekly. This means that, compared to weekly attacks on a global organization, there are twice as many attacks against Indian companies.
Most malicious files are sent by email. Almost 92% of malicious files are emailed in India, up to an average of 82% worldwide.
Many attacks also occur on/through cellular devices. In India, we are the most exposed through cell phones. The challenge here is multiple, especially when it comes to the type of downloaded programs. Previously, there was a compromised Wi-Fi threat. But I guess the maximum nets are safe at home.
Because of Covid, many IoT devices or devices are also violated.
We have known vulnerabilities in microchips or DNS servers. There were also a lot of fake and fake “Covid-related sites” (mainly in the first few weeks); then came other sites to sell drugs and fake equipment. All of those elements are designed for phishing or corporate data.
The total remote race posture has alerted a little and also restrict some access.
We have witnessed attacks on giant assets in India and phishing attacks that oppose users seeking access to non-public information.
Is it easy for others to protect their mobiles?
We have a population of 1.3 to 1.4 billion; and nearby, there are about 250 to 300 million smartphones. Most of them have a banking application or a telecommunications application or both. We can protect the programs or the device. At this stage of early maturity, there is greater awareness of application security.
Do you see corporations or are you aware of such attacks?
Most companies and Americans respond; that is, they know it until the attack occurs.
Next-generation companies, such as cloud companies, have also been raped in some cases; outdoors of classic businesses.
What are the target spaces of these cyberattacks?
The two or 3 vectors that attackers look for at the most have an effect on giant spaces like Qualcomm or Micorsoft; Violate remote and third access, how to break headlines in the cloud.
Has cybersecurity spending increased?
This is basically an on-demand quote. There is also a significant shift in capital expenditure towards operating expenses. The change accelerated after the pandemic. We had a very healthy first part (January – June) and, frankly, there is no slowdown in security spending.
