A circle of Philadelphia relatives is suing TikTok after the death of their 10-year-old daughter while attempting a video challenge posted on the social media site.
The challenge, called the “blackout challenge,” encourages users to suffocate, faint, and regain consciousness in front of the camera. Nylah Anderson discovered the subconscious in the closet of her mother’s bedroom, hanging from the shoulder strap of a purse. Tawainna Anderson, Nylah’s mother, claims that the video platform is negligent and has a “flawed design. “
Nylah saw the challenge on the app’s “For You” page. According to the lawsuit, the company’s set of rules sent the video to the 10-year-old boy.
Last year, a 12-year-old boy died in the same challenge. He used a shoelace to suffocate. Anderson says TikTok is aware of the risks, but has made no effort to change.
