Continuous review of Samsung Galaxy Watch 3: Wonderful potential, but key MIA features

CNET is also available in Spanish.

Don’t show that anymore

Samsung recently won FDA approval for its EKG application, but has not revealed when it will be implemented on the Watch 3 ($199 at Apple) or the 2019 Active 2 watch (which was also presented with EKG in the fact sheet). Blood pressure tracking in The Watch 3 is still pending FDA approval and SPO2 tracking is expected to be implemented through a software update later this year.

If you buy the Galaxy Watch 3 for any of those features, $400 turns out to be a maximum value to pay for a promise.

Once I was given beyond the outstanding fitness functions, I discovered that there was so much more that I liked about this watch. He was already a fan of the original Galaxy Watch ($219 on Amazon) with his circular face and physical rotating bezel: the Watch 3 is even prettier. It features a beautiful bright and easy-to-read AMOLED display even in broad daylight, useful if you are competing and want to temporarily check your stats during a workout. The screen can remain on if desired, although it will charge it in the battery branch (more on this later). I like to navigate the interface with the rotating bezel instead of staining the screen with my fingers.

When looking at the Watch 3 on my wrist, I think you can almost go through a classic analog watch thanks to its vintage design. Smaller glasses mean the screen is larger than the original, even if the watch frame has become smaller. Aleven, although it is still bulging under the stainless metal frame, which makes it thicker than I would like and not as comfortable to use at night as the Galaxy Watch Active ($163 on Amazon).

I tried the 41mm bronze edition (the watch can also be achieved in a length of forty-five mm), with pink cinnamon leather bracelets, a welcome step compared to the original Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Watch Active series silicone wristbands. . The bronze is much less eye-catching than the gold of the original Galaxy Watch and looks softer and more flattering on my wrist. If you plan to use it for exercise or swimming (or in my case, to bathe young children), you may also need to invest in a sports strap. I can see that the leather wears out after a while with common contact with water.

Despite its sleek exterior, the Galaxy Watch 3 can be used as an activity tracker. It adheres to 40 other workouts, adding swimming (indoors and outdoors) and will stumble and stay in seven of those workouts. About 10 minutes after starting my walk, I won a notification to start a workout and this gave me credits for the last 10 minutes.

A heart-shaped board shows you a breakdown of your activity minutes, calories burned, and rest time of the day relative to your goal.

I took my same 3-mile drive along San Francisco Bay without my phone to the trailer, and discovered it accurate enough to demonstrate my distance, speed and core frequency.

You’ll want to replace the settings to see the data you want at a glance in your career, because the default doesn’t come with the central frequency, which I personally like to have at hand. But I liked that he showed me a map of my career and a breakdown of my core areas at the end of the race. He told me that I had kept my pace of center up for 2 minutes, the final component of my career. You can also access this knowledge after the fact in the Samsung Health app.

I was curious to see the new racing master performing on the Watch 3, which guides him through a race by offering real-time feedback on speed and form. Instead of starting a general career, I decided on the race teacher on the watch and plugged my headphones. The voice of a robot woman told me to start my warm-up. The voice gave me race-paced alerts and generic tips for lengthening the stride and touchdown on the front of my feet instead of the heel.

In the future, Samsung claims that the watch will also provide post-workout research of your career that will come with data such as flight time and contact and asymmetry to tell you if you prefer one aspect or another. You can also tell your maximum VO2 or maximum oxygen intake workout to give you a concept of your overall fitness.

I can see how the career teacher and post-career evaluation can be helpful if you’re educated for a career or if you’re just looking to get the most out of your same previous course. But on its own, as it is, I don’t think I’d use the career teacher and that’s one of the many features I’ll have to review later. Samsung says this will be done through a software update in the third quarter of this year.

The Galaxy Watch 3 also launches a feature that will allow you to sync it with the house exercise videos that you can control from your wrist. Before the pandemic, I wasn’t a user of the kind who made exercise videos at home, however, I think the global pandemic has led us all to reconsider the way we exercise and since then I’ve done many categories of Pilates and yoga. on my TV Array Having the training on my wrist was a big step ahead of my own old routine.

I decided on an abs program in the Health app that consisted of 3 15-minute workouts a week and I was able to stream the first of the series on my Samsung TV and follow it with my watch. The clock vibrated to warn me when it was time to move on to the next workout and let me pause by pressing the button when I had to reset my position. Also, he gave me the right caloric credits at the end (or at least what I think is appropriate).

It’s not the first watch to offer something like this, but it’s smart to offer it natively and for free. My only complaint is that the training I chose also had a robot woman’s voice that guided you in training, and let’s say it’s not the ultimate motivation when you’re looking to hold a board for 60 seconds.

The Galaxy Watch 3 may not have the features it sought to test, such as the ECG, SPO2 tracker and blood pressure monitor, but there are a few other extras worth mentioning.

Like its predecessor, The Watch 3 can monitor the on-demand voltage grades of your central frequency data. The check takes a few seconds and forces you to keep your arm still. Once you have the data you need, it will write down the grades in the stress spectrum and give you the opportunity to do a minute of breathing exercises to help you decrease your rating.

I passed my stress when writing this exam on the deadline and detected very low levels, so I’m a little skeptical about its accuracy.

He also added a menstrual cycle track: enter knowledge into his watch and sync with the Samsung Health app, which can give you data about your next era and expected fertility window. The feature is not local to Samsung and is fed through the Glow app, which was already a call set in the category of tracking menstrual fitness and which I had used before.

The galaxy Watch 3’s other wonderful exclusive fitness feature is the detection feature, which I hope I never need. If the watch detects that it is not moving after a fall, it deserves to touch its emergency touch and percentage of its location without delay. I tried to turn it on falling on my bed several times but without success. The Apple Watch (series four and later) has a similar feature called fall detection that has actually stored lives.

One of my most important court cases about sleep tracking is based on the original Galaxy Watch and provides little context about their sleep habits, especially for someone who didn’t know much about sleep in the first place.

The Watch 3 has learned a lot from the mistakes of its predecessors and now provides a more complete review of your night with a complete breakdown of the sleep stages (light, REM, deep) and compares yours to a general range. It also gives you a score on those factors.

I never discovered that the score was very useful, however, comparing my knowledge to a general diversity helped me discover how to make the most of my dream. While my overall sleep time was good, I found that I didn’t spend much time in a “deep” sleep compared to what’s typical. I tried to go to bed an hour early, and my overall sleep time didn’t change, I was able to increase my deep sleep time and feel more rested in the morning.

I tried the Galaxy Watch 3 with an iPhone 11 Pro and a Galaxy S20 Ultra, and it works well on both, some of its functions, such as text responses and mobile payments, are only available to Android users. The watch works with Samsung’s Tizen operating system, is easy to navigate and offers much more customization than some of its competitors. You can set up widgets and rearrange apps directly from your watch screen.

You can write, scribble, dictate, or scribble a reaction and receive calls from your wrist. It doesn’t have a wide variety of third-party apps (Spotify and Strava are among the few), but it receives notifications from most of them, adding Facebook, WhatsApp and even CNET news alerts.

With Spotify, you get general music control, offline listening for Premium subscribers and LTE streaming (you’ll pay about $50 more for galaxy Watch 3).

The Galaxy Watch 3 has Samsung Pay, but unfortunately it’s NFC and the feature will work on NFC-enabled devices. Galaxy and Gear S3 phones ($330 on Amazon) have MST technology, so you can use them for contactless payments on almost all magnetic stripe credit card terminals.

Samsung says the Galaxy Watch 3’s battery will last up to two days, but there are many caveats. For starters, this applies only to the largest forty-five mm of the watch (the 41 mm will be closer to a day and a half) and is with “normal use”.

This was definitely not the case for me and I arrived a little at full 24 hours with a charge. I may have been more conservative with my use, but I don’t think I’ve done anything extraordinary. I set the screen to turn on with an average brightness, jog for 30 minutes outdoors (without my phone) while listening to Spotify and slept a full night.

The watch provides battery-saving tips, adds turn off the function still on, restrict screen expiration time and disable location data, but I think those features are taken into account in the one-and-a-half day statement.

I contacted Samsung about the battery and, after a little research, I knew I didn’t have the latest edition of the Watch app on my S20 Ultra. The company recommended updating it to see if I would approach the claim. I’ll report once I’ve re-run the test.

I was disappointed that the watch did not come with its own USB wall adapter, just the cable with the magnetic one. The credit is that you can rate it on any wireless tester, or even give the pass a quick tap if you have a Galaxy phone (S10 or higher). These phones have the Power Share feature that will allow you to rate the devices on the back of the phone.

The Galaxy Watch 3 has the potential to be wonderful as long as it fulfills its fitness promises. It looks wonderful and, despite everything, can still be an exercise tracker, but it doesn’t have the substance to help in some of its major vital demands. In the meantime, you can choose the Galaxy Watch Active 2 ($270 on Amazon), which, while not so pretty, has the same features for about $200 less.
