RISC-V for the Data Center: P870-D Overview
May 11, 2023: Canonical released the VisionFive 2-optimized Ubuntu edition of StarFive, the world’s first high-performance RISC-V single-board computer (SBC) with a built-in GPU.
RISC-V, a new paradigm for open hardware
Open criteria and collaboration are strategic for hardware and software across industries and geographies. Over the past decade, open and open criteria have reshaped our world. RISC-V is the most prolific and open instruction set architecture in history, leading hardware networking to embrace open criteria and collaboration at this level.
This open instruction set (ISA) architecture ushers in a new era of processor innovation through open popular collaboration and immediate adoption across the industry. For the popular ISA industry for computing, RISC-V ISA provides software and hardware design freedom in architecture. The architecture can be implemented in a wide variety of processors, from low-end microcontrollers to high-end server processors.
VisionFive 2 to StarFive
Founded in 2018, StarFive is a Chinese high-tech company with independent intellectual asset rights, providing next-generation products based on RISC-V, adding IP processors, SoCs, progression boards and more. StarFive is a leader in RISC-V Generation and Ecosystem Progression in China.
VisionFive 2 is the world’s first high-featured RISC-V single board (SBC) PC with a built-in GPU. Compared to its last generation, VisionFive 2 has been completely updated with significant innovations in CPU execution frequency, media processing capabilities and scalability. Its incredible functionality and moderate value make VisionFive 2 the first RISC-V progression board to date.
StarFive and Canonical Ubuntu to the VisionFive 2 SBC
“VisionFive 2 is the first RISC-V single-board PC with built-in GPU and is an exciting step forward for the entire RISC-V ecoformula,” said Frank Zhao, vice president of software at StarFive. “We are very pleased that Ubuntu, the most popular Linux operating system, is running successfully on VisionFive 2, thanks to our collaboration with Canonical. The operating formula and open-source software are for high-performance RISC-V applications. We are committed to supporting the progress of the RISC-V ecoformula, and StarFive will make new contributions to global open source with Canonical.
The availability of Ubuntu running on StarFive’s VisionFive 2 is the result of joint work between the Canonical and StarFive engineering teams. StarFive and Canonical have a history of collaboration: in August 2022, Ubuntu was enabled on the first-generation VisionFive card. The Canonical team ported Ubuntu to the StarFive VisionFive 2 SBC, with the support of StarFive’s engineering team, as part of a long-term collaboration between the two companies.
Ubuntu, subsidized through Canonical, provides a commercial-grade Linux distribution that can also be used for free by innovators and developers. “It’s a real excitement to collaborate with cutting-edge and visionary corporations like StarFive, and we’re excited to announce the availability of Ubuntu in the VisionFive 2 SBC. VisionFive 2 SBC is a cost-effective, high-performance progression platform that developers and practitioners will use for a diversity of edge computing use cases,” said Gordan Markuš, Head of Silicon Alliances at Canonical. “This partnership will provide users with a seamless progression experience, allowing them to leverage open source software and RISC-V through Ubuntu and VisionFive 2. “
Ubuntu for StarFive VisionFive 2 SBC is now available
An Ubuntu symbol is now available for the StarFive VisionFive 2 SBC, and more follow-up work is expected to come with new features and ports for the most recent versions of Ubuntu.
