Baseball team Canby Cougar made sure to end their season on a high note, dismantling the Oregon City Pioneers in a convincing three-game sweep to secure their spot in the OSAA playoff group.
The Cougars (15-12, 11-7 TRL) would possibly have swept their casual Crosstown rivals, but the series didn’t start smoothly unlike the Pioneers (4-21, 0-18 TRL).
With Oregon City out of the playoffs, the boys played as if they had nothing to lose and took a temporary 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an error and a pass.
But Canby remained calm under pressure, biding his time and waiting to attack. After two scoreless innings, the Cougars cleared early in the third, scoring five unanswered points to regain the game.
Clayton Langdale and Kellan Oakes produced two runs in the inning to boost their hit statistics.
From there, the Cougs locked themselves up completely. Joe Brauckmiller and Alex Evans didn’t allow a single hit in the final six innings of the game, combining to retire 8 as well. The Pioneers’ two safe throws in the first were the only ones. Canby allowed all day.
The next two games were true copies of others, with Canby winning back-to-back 12-1. On Tuesday, the Cougs made sure to honor their teammates who would soon graduate with another big third round.
However, instead of runs in the inning, the Cougars controlled incredibly to double that production, racking up 10 mind-blowing runs in a decisive third inning that put the game to bed early.
Oakes, Brauckmiller, Logan Robinson and Dom Pepper were the 4 Cougars to connect on hits in an inning that saw Canby total 4 hits, 4 bases on balls and 3 errors.
The most impressive part? Nine of the 10 problems came with two withdrawals from the board. Canby, who had led 0-1 before the third, added two more problems to finish the previous game due to the mercy rule.
The Cougs extended the attack a little further this time, scoring just 4 points in the 3rd – 19 points in 3 days in the 3rd set only for those who stayed at home – in the direction of the dominant 12-1 victory.
Four Pioneer errors and 11 safe throws by the Cougars were once too difficult to handle. Brauckmiller and Bryce Oliver led the game, with 3 hits, while Canthrough finished the year convincingly with a sweep.
The Cougars didn’t close the season with 3 straight wins, but they also finished with a 9-3 record to move up the standings. OSAA playoff circular: Canby’s first since 2008.
The Cougars’ first clash will oppose the Bears No. 20 of Bend Lava (11-14, 8-4 Summit). The Bears finished the season with a 2-5 loss, but showed promise at certain times of the year, adding a four-game winning streak.
Participants will be required to purchase tickets for the adjustment in advance at osaa. org/tickets. Transactions will not be accepted on the site. The game is scheduled to begin Monday at five o’clock in the afternoon in Canby.
