Canada’s telecommunications industry watchdog said it won a record number of customer court cases in 2024 involving television and phone services.
The Telecommunications and Television Services Complaints Commission won more than 20,000 customer court cases last year, a 38% increase through 2023.
Most of the complaints were about billing issues, prices and service quality, the organization said.
Complaints about Rogers service increased by eight per cent, complaints about Telus were up 53 per cent and Bell was the subject of a 46-per cent increase in customer complaints.
“It’s the big service providers that generate the bulk of complaints,” said Geoff White of the Public Interest Advocacy Center.
“There are 10 service providers or brands that cause between 80% and 90% of complaints, and it is a constant trend over time. But that indicates that consumers are not happy.
Howard Maker with the Complaints Commission said they advise customers to always check their bill, even if it is the same every month.
The Canadian Telecommunications Association, which represents the industry, said less than a tenth of every consumer filed a complaint about the service last year.
