Caltrans teams got rid of 10 rolling containers of vegetation, debris and shrub debris along Highway 101 between Los Carneros Road and Fairview Avenue in Goleta over a two-week period, pruning trees to provide public protection to groups in the event of an emergency. In July, two fires broke out along the stretch near homeless camps, sending flames to the canopy of trees and throwing embers into the road lanes.

The number of homeless people camping between the roaring Highway 101 and the train tracks has increased since the pandemic, as thousands of others in Santa Barbara County were driven from their paintings and many shelters had to cut their beds to maintain social distance. The cleanup took place instead of taking flight from the camps in accordance with the rules of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention so as not to dispose of citizens of the COVID-19 pandemic. The acquisition of a motel in Goleta was made at County Housing Authority sites to provide housing for homeless people. If successful, there would be 65 launches, but the procedure is still ongoing.
The removal of 60 tons of weed reduced the possibility of fuel along the road and garbage bags were delivered to the camp’s residents. They will leave them on the shoulder of the road and Caltrans has committed to pick them up every week. The assignment was a collaboration between Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol, the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office, County Firefighters, MarBorg, and the California Conservation Corps.
