U.S. mayors have ignored Donald Trump’s description of his cities as inundated with violence and the media policy of nonviolent protests in Portland and have denied the president’s claims of widespread “anarchy.”
But for Americans who consume most of the conservative media, Trump’s latest reference to “American carnage,” with “a horrific explosion of shootings, murders, murders, and heinous crimes of violence,” is as transparent as the news that crosses the screen.
The stars of conservative cable systems and major conservative news sites and social media accounts have echoed and amplified Trump since he declared himself “his president of law and order” in an outdoor appearance at the White House in early June.

It is possible that the conservative media simply Trump will create an impression of chaos, at least for his conservative audience. The mayors of 15 of America’s largest cities sent a letter Monday to Attorney General Bill Barr and Acting Homeland Security Secretary Chad Wolf.
“The murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis led to a national uprising and evaluation,” the letter reads. “Most of the protests were not violent and were directed at our communities.
“Where this is the case, the use of federal forces is still warranted. The unilateral deployment of these paramilitary forces in our peoples is totally incompatible with our democratic formula and our highest basic values.
