Boxing returns tonight to the Grand Conference Center, also known as Bubble at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. The light-heavyweight department takes the lead on the big occasion when Felix Verdejo takes on Will Madera in a 10-round lightweight fight. The map of the 4 fights will be broadcast live at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN with Jared Anderson instead of Hector Perez in the subtitle.
FACT SHEET
Overview
Verdejo and Madera could be the beneficiaries of the Miguel Marriaga vs. Mark John Yap fight being cancelled due to Yap’s inability (which is an understatement) to make weight, getting on the scales 8.7 pounds over the 128 catachweight limit that was set for this fight. It could make one wonder if Yap even tried to make weight. Never the less, here we are with what could prove to be a more entertaining main event.
A 27-year-old Puerto Rican, Verdejo (26-1, 16 KOs) stumbled upon Antonio Lozada when he lost by technical knockout in 2018, but recovered effectively with three wins since. Wood, 29, from Albany, New York, is undefees of (15-0-3, 8 KOs) as opposed to most of the time amid opposition on the road. This combat is perceived as an improvement/focus for Verdejo opposed to an undefeous but limited durable fighter with a smart record for television, so Verdejo’s promoter, Top Rank, will elevate him to the global charts in the hope that he will compete on one. eliminater of a global name in 2021.
This is a make or break fight for Verdejo. He has no choice but to win or most likely see his promoter release him or use him as a gatekeeper to assess rising talent. As in any fight, Madera who is undefeated has a chance to win, but he would have to be very aggressive and take it to Verdejo from the opening bell and apply pressure. Madera has the ability to knockout his opponents, however, he would have to have a perfect night to upset Verdejo.
Possibilities
Interestingly, since the announcement that this bout rose to the rank of the main event, according to BetOnline’s boxing odds, the Verdejo seed went from a -550 favourite to a -660 favorite overnight. Wood an outsider of ‘375’ and is now in ‘485’. There is a wonderful line price for the undefees of Wood if sports bettors feel it can win annoying.
Prediction
The only thing Madera has in his favor in this fight is that he doesn’t know what it’s like to lose. He still has the winner mentality and gets into tonight’s fight with the feeling that he’s the favorite.
Although Verdejo does not necessarily meet the expectations so far that the enthusiasts and his promoter had set him, his only defeat is against Lozada, who gave José Pedraza everything he could do a year ago before succumbing to a loss by technical knockout in what was very close. Fight. Expect Verdejo to know his length and merit, as well as his boxing skills, to find out if the Wood Typhoon in the early rounds if Madera decides to press. I decide on Verdejo to win the match against a very exaggerated Wood match. I like Verdejo in -660 to get the winning leg game, hand speed and boxing IQ to beat Madera in 10 rounds.
