LANSING, Michigan – U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (MI) has brought bipartisan law to U.S. telecommunications networks against cyber threats from foreign device providers, adding those connected to the Chinese government.
The Assuring Network Security Act, which Peters brought with Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI), would provide federal investment to telecommunications providers and schools to upgrade appliances from resources deemed unsafe, such as Huawei and ZTE. Peters and Johnson wrote a letter to Senate leaders last month about a desire to prioritize the removal of high-risk devices from foreign suppliers.
“As we become increasingly interconnected, especially this pandemic, it is important that our telecommunications networks are protected from adversaries like the Chinese government. We will have to have affordable and reliable telecommunications networks that can face economic and national security challenges,” he said. Senator Peters. “This bipartisan bill will allow our country to no longer have foreign telecommunications networks that can jeopardize our security, while encouraging and encouraging domestic suppliers. In doing so, we can strengthen the security of the Michigan network.”
“Vulnerabilities related to the progression and deployment of 5G technology, i.e. the risk posed across China, are one of the ‘generational risks that will shape our country’s long-term,” “as the FBI recently said, Senator Johnson said.” This key law addresses an eligibility factor so that all appropriate telecommunication operators can access the budget to “extract and replace” devices that pose a risk to national security. In our connected world, it is imperative that one hundred percent of our communication networks are secure, and this bill will help achieve this.
If passed, the law would allow telecommunications companies serving between two and ten million consumers and public and personal educational establishments to apply for this investment through the Federal Communications Commission. The invoice is based on the Secure and Reliable Communications Networks Act, enacted earlier this year, which prohibits telecommunications companies from installing appliances from certain vendors that have traditionally proven to be a security threat.
