Biden names 25 national science and generation medal winners

President Joe Biden has announced the latest recipients of the National Medal of Science and the National Medal of Technology and Innovation—the nation’s highest honors for exemplary achievements and leadership in science and technology.

Created in 1959, the National Medal of Science is administered by the White House through the National Science Foundation. The medal recognizes Americans who have made a notable contribution to science and engineering.

The National Medal of Generation and Innovation was created in 1980 and was administered for the White House through the Patent and Trademark Office of the United States Department of Commerce. It recognizes Americans and organizations for their lasting contributions to competitiveness and quality of life in the United States and has helped the country’s technology workforce.

The National Medal of Science was awarded to 14 recipients. Nine individuals were given the National Medal of Technology and Innovation, along with two organizations — Moderna, Inc. and Pfizer Inc.

Four of the awardees were professors at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The University of Minnesota, Stanford University, Harvard University and Vanderbilt University had two medal winners.

In a White House news release, Biden said, “Those who win those awards hold America’s promise by pushing the boundaries of what’s possible.
