Updated on July 29 with main points about the iPhone 16’s delayed AI software.
Two months before its release, a new leak suggests the next iPhone SE could quickly supersede the upcoming iPhone 16. It’s all thanks to the new hardware Apple will pack into the cheapest new iPhone on the market.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reports that Apple will introduce its 5G modem in its phones in 2025. This means that the iPhone 17 family is expected to adopt the new technology. Kuo also says that the fourth-generation iPhone SE, scheduled for release in early 2025, will also get the new modem.
Launching new hardware on the iPhone more akin to a budget modem is a brave choice. This means that Apple will pay the costs of the new iPhone 16 six months after its launch.
The iPhone 16 is the nearest competitor to the iPhone SE. Thanks to the push to bring generative AI to the full range of new iOS devices, the iPhone 16 will be running the same Apple Silicon A18 chipset as well as increasing the memory to allow for the smooth operation of the Apple Intelligence software. Apple’s AI will not run on older hardware, and the Apple Intelligence software suite will, the company hopes, be a key point of differentiation that will drive sales of new iPhones. It would be inconceivable for Apple to launch the iPhone SE without supporting Apple Intelligence.

Updated: Monday, July 29. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has released the main points about the public launch of Apple Intelligence. He notes that the first edition of iOS with generative AI won’t arrive with the iPhone 16 family in September, but later in October with the first update to iOS 18. Apple has planned an iOS release within a month of the release of an iPhone to catch up. any bugs or security factors revealed through feedback from millions of new users.
Apple Intelligence’s pride will triumph with the public more than a year after Google unveiled the concept of a first AI smartphone with the Pixel 8 family before Samsung made it widespread with Galaxy AI. Apple has been slow to respond to this radical change, and the iPhone 16 will be one of the first iOS devices to bring generative AI to its captive audience.
Yet, the iPhone software that will no doubt be heralded by Apple as a breakthrough will be at the bare minimum. The software that will match the Android offering—including the ability to use on-device data to process personalised AI searches and analyse what is on-screen for more context—will not be available until early 2025… the same timescale as the arrival of the iPhone SE.
As Apple’s plans for the iPhone over the next 12 months become clearer, the iPhone 16 looks weaker. Unless you have an absolute preference for a new iPhone that isn’t priced at a high-end flagship, waiting for the iPhone SE, with its newest hardware, revolutionary technologies, and revolutionary AI, turns out to be the smartest selection available. Last week it was reported that Apple would offer the iPhone SE with an OLED display. Again, the SE fits the specs of the iPhone 16. Assuming it’s priced as competitively as the previous SE models compared to the base iPhone, it’ll be tricky to introduce the iPhone 16 knowing that it’ll come at the most productive price for cash. a few months later.
Now for the benefits of equipping any iPhone with an Apple-designed 5G modem. We would have a tighter integration of hardware and software because the chipset would not want to be universal, a telephone platform, a modem and no compromises or compatibility would be necessary. You would have tighter integration of the software stack, giving the operating formula the complex wisdom of the only modem it will talk to.
Just as the transfer to Apple Silicon has improved performance, efficiency, and endurance, the same will happen with the transfer of Qualcomm’s modem generation to Apple’s.
The iPhone 16 will miss out on this benefit. The iPhone SE will be the first to benefit. And those who wait will be the first to find a brave new world when Apple makes its own connection.
