Employees at Apple’s retail stores in Atlanta will vote to shape Apple’s first syndicated store starting June 2, according to an NLRB file reviewed via CNBC.
If the organizers were successful, the store would be Apple’s first syndicated outlet in the United States.
Apple’s Cumberland Mall in Atlanta filed for unionization in April. To be certified, more than 50% of the store’s approximately one hundred eligible workers will need to vote to be represented through Communications Workers of America.
Organizers had in the past told CNBC that more than 70 percent of store workers had signed cards expressing interest in unionizing.
The election will take place in user and will take place from Thursday, June 2 to Saturday, June 4. Workers cannot mail ballots. The election date represents a step in efforts to organize the siege of Georgia.
The stipulated agreement between the NLRB and Apple will not be needed for a hearing before the scheduled election date and speeds up the process, a CWA representative said.
The organizing efforts at Apple’s retail outlets are part of a wave of activism developing across the country, as workers demand higher wages and operating conditions in reaction to the Covid-19 pandemic and emerging inflation.
Cumberland store organizers say their demands come with changes in the cost of living and “real wages” for employees, as well as greater career progression and more varied management.
Recently, a separate store in New York is collecting signatures as the first step in the procedure to be represented through Workers United. Employees at the Towson Mall in Maryland are organizing a union campaign, according to the Washington Post. If successful, they will be represented through the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers.
