Apple is exploring new suppliers of silicon-based OLED panels, which likely signals the advancement of a few more headphones that will accompany the Vision Pro, reports The Elec.
The Korean website has spotted an update in Apple’s source chain control for OLED-on-silicon (OLEDoS) panels, a key component of the Vision Pro headset. Currently, Sony offers these high-resolution micro demos, although their production capacity is limited. (up to 900,000 panels per year) and the lack of expansion plans have led Apple to look for opportunities for the future. Apple has issued a Request for Information (RFI) to Samsung Display and LG Display to evaluate their capabilities to produce larger OLEDoS panels. , ranging from 2. 0 to 2. 1 inches with a screen density of around 1,700 pixels per inch (PPI).
These screens would be larger than those currently used in Vision Pro and would have a lower resolution. Vision Pro uses Sony OLEDoS panels that feature a 1. 42-inch display with a pixel density of approximately 3400 PPI, a white OLED display with Color Clarity Generation (wOLED CF). This complicated demo generation is one of the main reasons for the high value of the headphones.
At Displayweek 2024, Samsung and LG showed off the advancements in the OLED microdisplay generation that Apple might like. Samsung has unveiled a 1. 03-inch RGB (direct cast) micro display, developed in collaboration with eMagin, that promises higher brightness levels. compared to the wOLED CF method. Meanwhile, LG introduced a 1. 3-inch 10,000 nits 4K OLED microdisplay, a micro-lens array (MLA) to increase brightness by about 40%.
Apple’s interest in larger OLEDoS panels with a lesser solution than the Vision Pro suggests that these may just be for new, less expensive combination True headphones. Apple is rumored to have been running such a device for over a year, with the newest indications recommending that it could be designed to connect to an iPhone or Mac due to the need for an expensive processor. The less expensive Apple Vision earbuds could launch by the end of next year.
