It wasn’t long before Apple’s remaining iPod touch was sold.
Consumers concerned about owning what is now part of the history of the cellular generation have gotten rid of all the color and garage features for Apple’s seventh-generation portable music and media player.
Some iPod touches are still available on other online sales sites. Best Buy (opens in a new tab), for example, still has the 128GB blue and black models, but the rest of the color features seem sold out.
In case the news was lost, Apple quietly shut down the iPod lineup on Tuesday by declaring it would sell the iPod touch “while supplies last. “pretty clear.
Buying those gadgets is nonsense. The seventh-generation iPod Touch is, for all intents and purposes, an iPhone 7 with no cellular features (it even has the same A10 processor).
It has a decent 8MP camera and can record up to 1080p at 60fps. The FaceTime camera is, at 1. 2 MP, pretty light, but at least you get 720p video. The 4-inch screen is small but has a sharp resolution of 326ppi.
It’s also Apple’s newest wearable handheld device that comes with a 3. 5mm headphone jack.
You can install the same apps from the App Store on iPod touch as you do on iPhone 13.
The iPod touch brought all those features to a device that, even with 256GB of storage, was, at $399, more than the top iPhone models.
What I mean is that there’s an explanation for why other people still need the iPod touch, and I’m not surprised they picked up each of them down to the last.
As for me, I have a small collection of those old devices. There’s a small iPod shuffle floating somewhere in a drawer, an iPod Nano, and two or three second- and third-generation iPod touch devices. These newer models stand out for their beautiful chrome rears. They were wonderful places to personalize with a recorded message (“Sophie’s iPod”).
All those older models, even the small shuffle with the iconic (albeit more physical) scroll wheel still feature the classic 30-pin connector. Current iPod touch players use the Lightning port.
Most no longer have the load, are broken in some irreparable way, or don’t have the latest iOS edition. These portable wonders are now part of my generation’s museum: a set of plastic drawers.
Those who acquire the seventh-generation iPod touch devices will likely get at least a few smart years of use until Apple ends software support. One day, Apple will release an edition of iOS (maybe iOS 17?) and they possibly don’t come with any iPod docking station.
And that will be the end of the line for this iconic product.
