Apple intensifies its war with Epic Games, the developer of “Fortnite”

After Fortnite of the App Store allowed players to make purchases directly from developer Epic Games, Apple has now stepped up its fight: the company has threatened to remove Epic Games from the Apple Developer program, disrupting it in progression on iOS and Mac.if Epic doesn’t capituate on August 28.

Epic Games is just the developer of Fortnite – they also make Unreal Engine, one of the leading game progression rigs on the market, used for thousands of games, many on iOS and some on Apple Arcade. The developer has filed an initial court order to terminate Apple’s action, saying its business will be “irreparably damaged” in a way that has nothing to do with Fortnite or direct payments. Epic doesn’t beat around the bush in disguise:

“Just over two weeks ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked in a congressional hearing whether Apple” had ever opposed or deprived a developer who had made his frustrations public “in front of the App Store. “Mr. Cook said,” We don’t fight or intimidate people. It’s very contrary to our company culture. But that’s precisely what Apple did. When Epic gave users of its Fortnite app their selection of how they wanted to shop, Apple responded by cutting Fortnite from its App Store. Then, when Epic sued Apple for breaking its monopoly on retail app stores and in-app payments, Apple fiercely responded. It told Epic that until the August 28, Apple would cut off Epic’s access to the entire developer team needed to create software for Apple platforms, adding Unreal Engine Epic offerings to third-party developers, which Apple never claimed to have seen. violated any Apple policy. Not content with cutting Fortnite off the App Store, Apple is targeting all Epic activity in unrelated areas. Epic will most likely succeed on the merits of its claims, but without a court order, Epic will suffer irreparable damage long before the final judgment.

Epic’s argument turns out to be that Apple’s action is retaliatory in nature and is not similar to express violations of the rules. We are still looking to discover all the possible effects here, however, Epic apple developer program may simply present disorders not only for Epic, but for any developer using Unreal.

We’ll see what happens, but for now, what’s at stake is even higher than they were. The next vital date in this match isn’t necessarily August 28, when Apple threatens to do its new action, but August 27, when Fortnite launches its new season and millions of iOS and Google Play users around the world won’t update the game. At this stage, Epic seems to expect customer dissatisfaction to play a vital role in figuring out what to do next.
