Apple assigns a password to users with the latest software updates announced at WWDC 2023.
Updates to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma will allow users to sign in to their Apple ID on the Internet with a password instead of a password. Apple has taken steps to use passwords as a more secure approach to accessing its accounts. Unlike a classic password that can be stolen or hacked seamlessly, a password is a unique key attached to your device. Instead of entering a password, an authentication key authenticates your identity through a PIN or biometric scan like Face ID that’s already related to your device.

Now, instead of looking for another password, you can log in to Apple websites with a password. Apple ID authentication keys also work with any site connected to your Apple ID, so you may see this option on other sites that have the option to sign in with Apple. The latest software updates are lately in developer beta, which are easy to install. But if you don’t need to deal with bugs similar to the beta, the passkey feature will be available when iOS 17, iPadOS 17, and macOS Sonoma launch later this year. If you have the developer beta, here’s how to test it with iOS 17.
For the first time, Apple has made developer betas loose and available to everyone, rather than requiring a $99 subscription to the developer program. For quick installation of iOS 17, refer to this guide.
Access keys can be tested on the Apple iCloud cloud storage site and Apple ID site, allowing you to access Apple such as Messages, FaceTime, App Store, and Apple Store from the web. Click Sign In to get started and enter your Apple ID.

Once you enter your Apple ID, you will be asked to enter your password or sign in with your iPhone. As you’ll see here, this indicates that it requires iOS 17 or later.

On your iPhone, a window will pop up asking you to sign in with Face ID. Click Continue. Behind the scenes, Apple generates a unique code that authenticates your device and connects it to your Apple ID. From there, you will log in and you will have to enter a password.
