Washington commanders bought land in Woodbridge, Virginia, for what could be a prospect for the NFL team’s next stadium, according to a user familiar with the situation.
The user spoke to The Associated Press on Monday on condition of anonymity because the team had not announced the acquisition. Commanders have paid about $100 million for 200 acres of land in Prince William County and are still elsewhere in the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia, the user said.
This site is just over 20 miles outside of D. C. , about a 45-minute drive from RFK Stadium, which was the team’s home from 1961 to 1996. The existing lease for commanders at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, expires in 2027.
ESPN, which was the first to announce the sale, added that the site is the team’s preferred selection for a 60,000-seat dome-shaped stadium that would be available year-round and would feature an education hall and amphitheater. Building a stadium that can host a Super Bowl has long been considered one of the organization’s goals.
Owner Dan Snyder and Co. examined several conceivable sites in D. C. , Maryland and Virginia, though the specter of investigations into the team’s finances obscures how jurisdictions might take care to help fund a stadium.
Last month, the Maryland House of Representatives approved a $400 million plan to expand the domain around FedEx Field, which did bring cash for a new stadium. Virginia lawmakers failed to pass the law that would allow commanders to build their next stadium there.
