Animal Crossing is the best-selling of the year in Japan to date

A list of Japan’s best-selling video games has emerged in 2020 and Animal Crossing: New Horizons is comfortably on the most sensible list with over five million games moved.

The figures come from knowledge through Famitsu, which offers a review of the Japanese video game market during the first six months of the year.

The report takes into account physical games and download cards. It shows that Animal Crossing sold more than five times as many retail copies as the second-largest title, Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which sold about 931,165 copies.

New Horizons broke sales records for Switch in Japan when it was released, the best-selling console game to date, and has since been shown to be the best-selling Switch game of all time in Japan.

Famitsu shared market figures for retail revenue. Consumers spent 95.47 billion yen ($905 million) on software and 79.3 billion yen ($751.9 million) on hardware.

This represents a total of 174.8 billion yen ($1.6 billion) spent on retail in the first six months of the year.

Hardware and software showed significant increases compared to the first part of 2019, when the software generated 73.99 billion yen ($701.4 million) and the hardware generated 66.1 billion yen ($626.7 million). Total profit for the first part of 2019 140 billion yen ($1.3 billion)

Finally, the site also revealed the sales figures of the consoles, being Switch obviously the leader with 2.6 million units. This brings lifetime console sales in Japan to more than 14 million units.

PlayStation moved 35,812 devices over the six-month period, bringing total sales to 9.2 million. Xbox One sold 2,685 games with lifetime sales of 113,931.

The Microsoft console outperformed the Nintendo 3DS, which sold more than 33,000 games in the first part of the year. The latter has sold more than 24.5 million games in Japan.

These figures come with all console variants, such as Switch Lite, PS4 Pro, and Xbox One X.
