How can a developer clone a GitLab repository from the server to a local machine?GitLab repositories are grouped into GitLab mappings.Therefore, before you can clone a GitLab repository, a GitLab mapping must first exist.
If you don’t already have one, it’s easy to create a GitLab repository.
The GitLab repository and mapping used in this example is called gitlab-made easy.It’s public and it’s a README file.
Developers do not want to come with a README when creating a GitLab repository; However, if a developer needs to clone a GitLab repository, they might want to have something in that repository to verify.Otherwise, if the cloned GitLab repository is empty, how do I know if GitLab cloning has succeeded?That’s why I put a README record on this task and so did you.
Once the mapping is created, the next step is to open an Ubuntu terminal window and run the “git clone” command.But first, you want the repository URL. A developer can locate the URL by clicking the giant blue cloning button on the repository contact page in the Git graphical interface.Copy the HTTP URL, then open an Ubuntu terminal window.
From the Ubuntu terminal, call the “git clone” command and upload the GITLab repository URL.
If “git clone” does not work, you may not have installed Git locally.Developers can solve this challenge by running a “sudo apt-install git” command.Once the installation is complete, simply regenerate the “git clone” command to clone the GitLab repository.
After effectively cloning the GitLab repository, navigate to the newly created gitlab-made-easy folder.Inside, you’ll see a README file, which verifies that the cloning operation was successful.
The following steps would come with creating new files in your Git paint directory, adding those files to the index, issuing commits, creating GitLab branches, and cutting branches when they become obsolete.Git-based editing is now at your fingertips.
Although we use an on-site and self-hosted GitLab installation in this example, all the steps here also for the cloud-based GitLab offering.
