AMD is ditching the Radeon RX 7900 GRE from its current-gen GPU line-up, if fresh gossip from the grapevine is to be believed.
According to a report from Dutch technology Tweakers, the RX 7900 GRE is now at the end of its life, as AMD has stopped production of this graphics card.
Tweakers explains that it received notice from a retail store that this was the case, and that store heard from suppliers that the 7900 GRE was out of the mix.
Add plenty of salt, but if true, once existing stock has sold through, it’ll be curtains for this popular GPU. (The RX 7900 GRE is, in fact, still currently our top pick of the best graphics cards out there).
The site claims that AMD will continue with the card with its software (driver updates), as obviously expected.
Tweakers further notes that AMD didn’t reply to requests to confirm that the RX 7900 GRE had been discontinued, but that’s not surprising, we wouldn’t expect Team Red to do so.
The report also notes that inventory (presumably in the Netherlands) is dwindling, and the lack of availability supports the concept that this RDNA 3 GPU, which was first introduced as an Asia-only model, before being released globally, is disappearing. Formation
Moving on to Newegg in the US, we note that one style RX 7900 GRE (the Acer BiFrost spin on the AMD GPU) remains on sale and all the others are now sold out. Micro Center also seems to be almost out of stock, so this graphics card seems to be disappearing. Stocks have reportedly been declining over the past two months.
Why AMD could damage our favorite GPU? Well, that could have something to do with the performance of the Navi 31 chip, which means that silicon suitable for the high-end RX 7900 models, which would be reused for GRE, is running out.
Of course, Navi 31 production will most likely be reduced anyway, as new RDNA four graphics cards are rumored to be released in the first quarter of 2025. They will supposedly come with the RX 8800 XT (and above), with that GPU you can simply make the RX 7900 GRE redundant in terms of price proposition.
In short, it’s another sign that a tough mid-range offering is imminently expected: AMD is expected to unveil its new RDNA 4 GPUs at CES 2025, with the cards launching shortly after, and we’re looking forward to seeing how those models take shape. RX8000.
