Amazon Online will build a new multi-million pound hub that will create more than 2,000 jobs. The so-called distribution centre will be built in Northampton and will take orders from consumers in 2026.

The progression will create 1,400 new jobs when it launches, and is expected to grow to more than 2,000 within 3 years of operation, with roles adding engineers, human resources and IT, fitness and protection specialists, finance, as well as staff responsible for picking, packing and shipping customer orders.

Amazon said the new construction will be the next-generation distribution center, with 3 floors of robotics where products will be stored and visitors’ orders will be ready using technology. Louise Wall, lead executive of the Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Amazon’s investment in Northamptonshire will create thousands of new jobs in one of the most complex developments of its kind in the world. This is a significant confirmation of the strategic location of SEGRO Logistics Park Northampton and the importance of our region’s role in the UK logistics industry.

Neil Travis, Amazon’s Regional Director, said: “The East Midlands is a vital region for Amazon, with more than 6,000 small and medium-sized business partners, and I’m very pleased to see our continued commitment with this £500 million investment in a new distribution centre in Northampton.

“The new site will create more than 2,000 new jobs, bringing our total in the East Midlands to more than 10,000 full- and part-time positions, and our investment in the region to more than £4 billion since 2010. Amazon continues to invest in our state-of-the-art facilities and technology to provide our workers with some of the most complex workplaces of their kind in the world, ensuring their well-being and meeting our customers’ expectations.

Amazon has invested more than £56 billion in the UK since 2010.
